Hi, Sue!
I want to thank you for so gracefully handling the practice issue with Emily. In spite of my not-so-indirect complaining about it (which stemmed from my frustration as a parent), you were able to make her feel capable of being more in charge of things herself and gave her some very useful and specific guidelines. You did all of that without backing down on what you expected someone at her level to be able to accomplish, nor the length of time it should take. Phew! It can be so difficult when we are butting heads at home, but she adores you and her violin, and very much wants to work at things.
At any rate, I'm certain you've witnessed this with learning of all types as a teacher, as a mom, as a grandmother, and as a homeschooler. It was a delight to watch how you constructively addressed the situation with a great deal of respect for her as a student and a human being. It was one of those times I'd love to have a tape of to show student teachers: "Here's how a pro does it"! It was a good reminder to me, too, about always being respectful. Now, if I can just remember that the next time she and I are having a similar "discussion".
Bless you, Sue!
Kathryn
